Dubai's historic and modern cityscape

First-visit itinerary Three days

Three days in Dubai.
Make space for your kind of trip.

A flexible first-timer plan: explore one area at a time, choose a few anchors and leave room for the city between them.

The short answer

For three days, group plans by area: one day for Old Dubai, one for Downtown, and one flexible day for the experience that matters most to you. Don’t treat this as a race or assume every stop fits. Choose one major timed attraction per day, then add nearby plans only when opening times, transfers and energy allow.

This is a suggested framework, not a live schedule. Check official opening hours, timed-entry availability, transport timetables and event updates for your exact dates.

Day 1 · Old Dubai

Start with the city’s layers.

Morning

Explore a heritage area at an unhurried pace.
Choose a neighbourhood or museum visit that interests you. Check current opening arrangements and any admission requirements before setting out.

Midday

Pause for lunch and shade.
Build in time for a meal and a break rather than scheduling another cross-city transfer into the hottest or busiest part of the day.

Afternoon

Choose one Creek-side stop or crossing.
Check RTA marine transport routes and operating details if you want to use an abra or other public boat service. Routes and service availability depend on the specific service.

Evening

Stay nearby or plan a separate dinner.
If considering a dhow cruise, confirm the exact boarding location, route, timing and dinner inclusions for your booking.

Day 2 · Downtown Dubai

Give the landmark day some breathing room.

Morning

Book one main attraction for a time that suits you.
If Burj Khalifa is on your list, compare the official ticket levels and verify the booking terms, entry time and current hours before paying.

Midday

Keep the next stop close by.
Plan for queues, security, walking and a proper meal. Nearby does not mean instantaneous: check the attraction’s entry instructions and allow a buffer.

Afternoon

Choose a second activity only if the day still feels comfortable.
Prefer a relaxed café, a short walk or one additional booked experience over stacking several timed tickets.

Evening

Decide whether you want a view, dinner or downtime.
For a sunset or evening entry, check the exact ticket and any access restrictions. Do not rely on an old timetable or assumed show schedule.

For ticket choices, see which Burj Khalifa level to choose. RTA’s Journey Planner can help compare public transport routes.

Day 3 · Your Dubai

Pick one finale—not all of them.

A

Desert experience

Choose this if the landscape and a planned outing are the priority.

Many desert experiences take a substantial part of a day. Confirm pickup, duration, activities, meal arrangements and return time; avoid placing a fixed evening booking too close to the estimated return.

Compare safari formats and check the operator’s date-specific inclusions.

B

Coast and Marina

Choose this if you want an easier-paced day by the water.

Keep the plan around one coastal area. A yacht charter is a separate private booking, not a walk-up boat ride: confirm the group total, departure point, duration and weather terms in advance.

What to compare for a yacht charter.

C

More city, less rushing

Choose this if you would rather revisit an area or see a museum.

Pick one attraction, market or neighbourhood you skipped earlier. Verify current hours and ticket availability, then leave unplanned time for meals and getting around.

Before you lock it in

Make a flexible itinerary real.

  • Group stops by area and check door-to-door travel time.
  • Confirm opening hours, ticket rules and any advance booking for your dates.
  • Check RTA’s current timetable, route and nol fare information before relying on public transport.
  • Keep at least one open block for meals, rest, weather or a change of plans.
  • For any tour, verify pickup, return time, inclusions, cancellation rules and operator contact details.
  • Check event and holiday announcements for service changes that affect your visit.

Common questions

A few useful itinerary notes.

Can I do Old Dubai, Burj Khalifa and a desert safari in one day?

You may be able to visit several places, but combining multiple distant areas and a substantial tour can make the day rushed. Choose one main anchor, then check actual travel and tour times before adding stops.

Which area should I stay in for this itinerary?

It depends on your budget, preferred atmosphere and transport needs. Compare the daily routes from each accommodation option rather than choosing by map distance alone; we will add an area-by-area stay guide as the content library grows.

Is this itinerary suitable in summer?

Use the same area-based structure but reduce exposed outdoor time, plan indoor breaks and check current weather and venue hours. Adjust the day order to actual heat and operating conditions.
